Why You May Need To Change Up Your Skin Care Routine

Most people have a really hard time finding a skin care line that suits their needs or maybe the product was good at first but now seems to have stopped giving you results. In my experience it has come down to two reasons.
One, your skin goes through cycles. These cycle changes can be brought on by stress, hormone levels, diet, and our environment. Understanding how your skin reacts to these reacts to these cycles is key. Keep a journal, pay attention to what  factors are effecting your skin.
Two, never having a proper skin analysis or not being up to date on one. When having a skin analysis done by an esthetician they’ll use certain lights and tools to understand what is going on under the surface of your skin and help you get to the root of the issue. Your esthetician then can set you up with a game plan to properly treat your skin at home and in the salon.
Here at Flying Scissors Salon we use Naturopathica who has made finding the right products simple for you by breaking down their line into 4 categories:
                                                        1) Hydrate and Protect
                                                        2) Brightening
                                                        3) Smooth and Firm
                                                        4) Clarifying
Each category features unique products to target certain conditions and areas. Since Naturopathica uses plant based ingredients you never have to worry about any harsh interractions from mixing and matching categories to tailor to your specific skin needs. Scedule today for a free consultation and our esthetician Kat can set you up with a skin care routine designed for you.

The Truth Behind Unicorn Hair

Fashion colors have become INSANELY popular over the last year. I’m sure you’ve seen “unicorn” hair posts all over pinterest and instagram. So what exactly  goes into achieving a look like that. Here are a few IMPORTANT things to remember when you ask your stylists for those crazy, cool colors.

  1. It takes time & LOTS of it.

So what does that mean? Expect to be in salon for multiple appointments because it’s going to take time to get you light enough. Not only multiple appointments, but for each appointment being at least 4 hours long, sometimes even longer. Lightening hair is a time consuming process as it is, then add deep conditioning treatments to keep your hair happy, and blow dries after most steps, and cutting and blow drying again. (be sure to bring a snack)

  2. It’s not cheap.

Keep in mind, multiple appointments can add up and be costly. Always be open with your stylists about what you’re willing to pay to make sure you both are on the same page when it comes to $$$.

  3. You have to be BLONDE first to have unicorn hair in the end.

Your hair has to look like this     if you want to look like this .
At the very least you need to be a darker blonde for your hair to even take to darker fashion colors. Looking for a pastel lilac, let’s start with violet first and safely get you to that lilac color you’re wanting.

  4. REMEMBER fashion colors are NOT permanent.

Fashion colors are direct dyes offering TEMPORARY color. They fade faster, which is why using the products your stylists recommends is crucial. Although the products won’t completely stop fading, it’ll slow down the process a little but expect to be back in salon for a touch up between 4-6 weeks.

Still think fashion colors are for you? Talk with your stylist today about the HEALTHY way to get there to maintain the integrity of your hair because as always that is our main goal.

Lighting Makes a BIG Difference

Ever come into the salon to have your hair colored and love it, only to go home and notice it may look a little warmer or different in the light in your own bathroom? Lighting makes a big difference when it comes to hair color. That’s why it’s so important to see your hair in natural light because chances are if your like there, you’ll like it anywhere.

Different lighting can give off difference affects to your hair like looking too warm or brassy, to too blue, to too dull. Here are some side by side pictures of the SAME hair, done on the SAME day, but how lighting completely changes the color.

See how vibrant both colors look in the sunlight? Who knew lighting would make such a difference.

Top Tips for Winter Hair Care

Living in Florida we lucked out. Our winters aren’t near as harsh as the people who live up north. We don’t have to worry about shoveling snow or being snowed in, that’s for sure. But even though it may not be AS cold, our outside environment definitely changes. The air gets cooler, the humidity seems to disappear, and it’s just all around more enjoyable to be outside. But with that, the importance of hair care increases.

Here are the top 4 tips for maintaining that healthy, gorgeous hair when the weather gets colder.

  1. TRIM YOUR HAIR
Being sure to trim your hair year round is always important, but winter time especially. Colder weather brings drier air making the hair cuticle easier to lift making it harder to retain moisture and easier to split, which brings us to tip number 2.
  2. ADD DEEP CONDITIONING TREATMENTS IN SALON & AT HOME
If your hair is unable to retain moisture, it’s going to become dry and brittle. Adding deep conditioning treatments are a good way to reset and refresh your hair by adding the proper protein and hydration. But don’t just leave the conditioning treatments for in salon, Pureology just came out with TWO new SuperFood Hair Masks for home and the hydrate one would be perfect for this time of year.
  3. SECURE FLY AWAYS & SMOOTH OUT YOUR ENDS
During winter we like to bring out the boxes of hats, beanies, and scarves because let’s be real, us Floridians think 50 degrees is cold (HA!), and we’ll do whatever it takes to stay warm. Hats and scarves cause friction creating unwanted frizz so be sure to have a package of Redken’s Frizz Dismiss Fly-Away Fix on hand. Fly-Away Fix sheets eliminate static and fly aways, are portable so you can keep them in your purse for easy access. You’re also going to want use an oil to seal the cuticle to protect from further splitting and frizz. We love the Agave Healing Oil because it’s not heavy or greasy on the hair and gives you an extra shine boost.
  4. WASH YOUR HAIR LESS
This entire blog has been about keeping your hair moisturized to avoid further damage, so it’s only necessary that washing your hair less is in the top tips for winter haircare. Shampooing your hair too much causes you to strip the natural and needed oils your hair requires when it’s cold outside. Dry shampoo is going to be your absolute best friend. It’s going to help you skip a few hair washes and will soak up the excess oil. For all my brunette friends, Redken has a brown tinted dry shampoo in the Pillow Proof line that will avoid giving you the powdery white cast normal dry shampoos can cause.

With all that being said, stay warm, have happy hair, and a happy winter! 🙂
